Sony has a problem. Hackers claim that they decrypted the PlayStation 5 system files

Your success group Fail0verflow She boasted on Twitter on Monday. The rather laconic message shows that the hackers managed to gain access to the keys that allow the decryption of data in the PlayStation 5 system software. This does not mean that the console’s security is compromised, but it is the first step in this direction.

Fail0verflow – so far – does not reveal any technical details. This is likely a deliberate action to make it difficult for Sony to patch any holes in the PlayStation 5 system files. We also do not know what the hackers’ further plans are, although you can of course guess them.

Hackers took over the decryption keys for the PS5. What does it mean?

If the Fail0verflow group goes one step further and manages to crack the system software, it will have serious consequences for the console manufacturer. Breaking these security measures means that you can install uncertified and pirated games on your device.

This is obviously against the law (including Polish – Art. 267 of the Penal Code), but hackers do not do anything about it. The history of breaking security and “remaking” consoles is as old as the consoles themselves.

For Sony, the whole situation is so problematic that hitting the PlayStation business model. It is worth remembering that both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are sold at a loss (the production costs of the unit console are higher than its price). Console producers earn primarily from the margin from the sale of games in official channels, such as the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.

What can Sony do? Unfortunately, not much. We have seen many times in the past that there are no security features that hackers cannot handle. The PS5 producer must count on players and the fact that even after “breaking” the console, most of them will still want to pay for games that – let us recall – are becoming more and more expensive. Currently, the prices of many new titles exceed PLN 300.
