Google is gradually adding new functions to the Maps service, making it a real tool for planning both short routes and longer vacation trips. Now, however, we will also get a function that will be very useful during everyday driving around the city.
It’s easier to plan a route and share lists with friends
The first new feature is a redesigned tab with public transport directions. that after the changes, the Maps will more clearly show such key elements as the number of transfers and the length of the journey. There is also a filter that will allow Google to suggest the route most suited to individual needs. We will be able to ask Maps to indicate a route with the fewest walking sections or with the fewest transfers.
Moreover, in over 80 cities around the world, railway stations and metro entrances will be marked on the Maps, making it easier to know which exit to use to quickly change to a tram or bus. The maps are also intended to show the exact walking route to the metro entrance or a specific railway station, so that it is easier to find a train going in the right direction.
The second novelty is the update of lists in Google Maps. The service has long made it possible to add individual places to lists and then make them available for viewing by others. Now Google will make it easier to create shared lists that you can use with your friends. What’s more, each group member will be able to mark places with selected emoticons.
Google believes that this feature will allow for easy planning of trips in smaller and larger groups. Each user added to the group can mark points on the list with a heart or thumbs up icon, thus voting for or against adding each location to the final travel plan. Could this function have a chance to replace many hours of discussions in groups on Messenger and WhatsApp? We’ll see.
The third novelty has a typical social dimension. Google has added the ability to react with emoticons to photos found in Maps. There will be a heart icon next to each photo showing the place we are interested in. After tapping it, you will be able to choose one of several emoticons, just like you do with social media posts. The reaction count will then be seen by all other Google Maps users.
Reactions are available in Maps now, and the other two additions will gradually roll out to users around the world over the next few weeks. The features will be available on both iOS and Android phones. However, Google does not mention that they will be available in the browser version of Maps.
