The theft of our personal data, including the PESEL number, may enable criminals to take out a loan, payday loan, buy a smartphone on a subscription basis, or even obtain a duplicate of our SIM card (which in turn may lead to taking over our bank account).
Fortunately, we will soon be able to ensure that our PESEL number turns out to be useless in the hands of fraudsters. , which resulted in, among others, creation of a register of reserved PESEL numbers. Pursuant to these regulations, each financial institution, before granting a loan or other operation requiring the use of PESEL, is obliged to verify whether a given number is not included in this register.
Everyone will be able to reserve their PESEL number, which will protect them against unjustified claims arising from certain contracts (including sale of real estate, credit, loan or leasing). Reservations can be made in the mObywatel application, but also at the office where you report, for example, the loss of your ID card
– explained in July the Minister of Digital Affairs, Janusz Cieszyński.
Importantly, according to the Act, verification of the PESEL number will also be necessary when withdrawing cash at a bank branch when the amount exceeds three times the minimum wage.
In the event of a PESEL restriction, payment will be possible only after 12 hours from the account holder submitting a cash withdrawal instruction, even if the restriction is withdrawn.

Starting from November 17, every adult citizen will be able to independently:
- reserve your PESEL number;
- withdraw the restriction of the PESEL number;
- set automatic blocking of the PESEL number;
- check the history of PESEL number verification by institutions, companies and individuals;
- view the history of status changes.
