Huge problems of GTA: The Trilogy. Gamers are furious with Rockstar. And they have reasons for this

It was going to be an exciting journey into the past for us. Rockstar has decided to refresh the three classic installments of the Grand Theft Auto series – GTA III, GTA: Vice City oraz GTA: San Andreas – and publish them as a collection – GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The developers promised that the remasters would offer better graphics and more modern gameplay (e.g. thanks to the autosave) and will fix a number of bugs.

The reality turned out to be brutal. When GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition went on sale a few days ago, it turned out that the new versions of the games not only did not correct the old bugs, but also added new ones. In addition, there is a terrible optimization, which at times cries out to heaven for vengeance.

Remaster of GTA III released in 2001 on the base PS4 has problems maintaining stable 30 frames for a second (!). The PS5 version, on the other hand, cannot sustain 60 FPS. Let us remind you that on the latest Sony console in 60 frames we will play such masterpieces as The Last Of Us: Part II or God of War. How is it possible that a game from 20 years ago performs so badly on such a powerful console?

The graphic design and character models, which have already had numerous memes, are also controversial. Instead of going in one direction, the developers decided to combine the classic GTA atmosphere with the cartoon style of Fortnite. The effect is comic at best.

GTA: Definitive Edition comes and goes. Furious players

However, people who bought the PC version of GTA: Definitive Edition were in an even worse situation. Even on the day of the Rockstar premiere – without any announcement – completely disabled the Rockstar Games Launcherwhich is necessary to run games from this manufacturer, causing considerable indignation among players who – let us recall – paid almost PLN 270 for the game. Last Saturday, the company released a message that reads as follows:

Rockstar Games Launcher is live, but GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition cannot be purchased or played as we are deleting files that were accidentally included in this bundle. We apologize for the confusion and hope to have the correct version available soon.

Earlier this week, the issue was finally fixed and GTA: Definitive Edition for PC is back in stock. However, this does not change the fact that the whole situation is a huge image failure for Rockstar, and many players in the meantime demanded a refund for the purchased product. The fury of the players can also be seen in the ratings that the trilogy collects on Metacritic.

Why is it so bad if it was supposed to be so good? According to Digital Foundry, the problem is basically the root cause. Studio Groove Street Games, which is responsible for the remasters of the iconic GTA hits, was based on nNot on the original games, but on their mobile ports, which have been famous for their bugs for years.

Additionally the developers decided to move the game from the outdated RenderWawe engine for the new Unreal Engine 4. Such a decision was, of course, the right one. The problem is that it also gave rise to numerous challenges related to, among others, with the optimization and transfer of character models to a new engine, which apparently this inexperienced studio simply could not cope with.
