Although rumors about the successor to Steam Deck have been circulating in the industry for months, no one probably expected that Valve would so quickly decide to release a refreshed version of its portable console, which – as the manufacturer itself recently announced – has already sold “several million copies”.
However, the new Steam Deck, specifically Steam Deck OLED, has just become a fact. On Thursday, the official presentation of the device took place, which will go on sale on November 16.
Steam Deck OLED officially. It’s not just a new display
The main distinguishing feature of Valve’s new equipment is the OLED display, which replaced the previous LCD screen. We are dealing here with a 7.4-inch organic panel working at a resolution of 1280×800. It offers a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz (previously 60 Hz) and its peak brightness is 1000 nits. The manufacturer has also updated the touchscreen reporting frequency to 180 Hz, reducing latency and improving accuracy.
Although the new Steam Deck offers the same performance as its predecessor, its system (APU) is now made in a 6-nanometer technological process (previously it was 7 nm). The memory speed has also been improved (up to 6400 MT/s) and the cooling module has been thickened to improve its operation.
One of the biggest problems with the Steam Deck was the relatively short battery life of the device. This is also expected to improve. Steam Deck Oled is equipped with a larger 50 Wh battery, which, combined with a more energy-efficient OLED screen and new 6 nm lithography, will translate into from 3 to even 12 hours of gaming on a single charge.
Steam Deck OLED supports Wi-Fi 6E, which translates into increased bandwidth and lower latency. The console itself is also slightly lighter. It weighs 640 grams, which is about 5 percent more. less than the original Steam Deck.
