From New Year’s Day to Christmas, the federal government of USA recognizes 11 holidays, including Veterans Day (Veterans Day, in English).

This year, Americans will have November 10th off, although this day doesn’t actually commemorate any date, but the November 11th holiday, which falls on a Saturday, will be moved to Friday, November 10th.

What is celebrated on November 11?

This day commemorates the Veterans Day o Veterans Day. Its origins date back to the end of the First World War. The first anniversary of the end of the war was celebrated on November 11, 1919. President Woodrow Wilson declared Armistice that day.

Twelve years later, In 1938, November 11 became a federal holidaystill called Armistice Day, in commemoration of those who died during the First World War.

A few years later, November 11 began to commemorate all those who had taken part in any battle in the service of the US military. It was not until 1954 that Armistice Day legally became Veterans Day.

During this day there are tributes, parades and ceremonies. The most important celebration is the one held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Arlington Cemetery, Virginia. (JO)
