This is one of the most important numismatic discoveries in recent years – Italian experts do not hide their excitement. Thousands of ancient Roman coins were found at the bottom of the sea off the coast of Sardinia. What’s more, they are all in excellent condition.

“The follis deposit from the first half of the 4th century AD was discovered off the coast of Sardinia,” the Italian Ministry of Culture reported on the website X. The minute-long recording provided by the ministry shows divers fishing out ancient Roman coins from the seabed. According to estimates, there may be as many as 50,000 of them.

Ancient coins were found near the town of Arzachena in Sassari province. The agency cites Italian researchers who estimated that the bronze coins were minted between 324 and 340, after the monetary reform carried out in the Roman Empire by Emperor Diocletian. The coins come from various mints and are fully legible.

The discovery was made by a diver who noticed metal objects at the bottom of the sea. Then, the site was examined by divers from the special department for supervision over archaeological monuments and carabinieri from the cultural heritage protection department. The group found a huge number of coins in excellent condition in the sand. – This is one of the most important numismatic discoveries in recent years. It highlights the richness and importance of the archaeological heritage that still lies on the seabed, said Luigi La Rocca from the Directorate-General for Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, quoted by ANSA.
