In Great Britain, President Antonio Guterres, representatives of 27 governments, think tanks, and companies such as Google, Meta and Microsoft flew to Bletchley. The host was British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. Elon Musk could not miss such an event.
Elon Musk threatens that artificial intelligence will take our jobs
During the summit, Elon Musk and Rishi Sunak participated in a panel composed only of them. The billionaire stated that A.I. ( – artificial intelligence) is “the most destructive technology in history”, because for the first time we will have something that is “smarter than humans”.
We will reach a point in history where no work will be needed. You will be able to work if you want, for your own satisfaction, but the AI will be able to do everything
– said Elon Musk,
The billionaire explained that he didn’t know whether it would make people feel good or bad. However, he stated that one of the challenges of the development and decline of the labor market will be how we define our lives.
The billionaire also praised the summit itself, which was intended to help introduce an important change in the development of advanced artificial intelligence. In his opinion, the mere fact that a summit provides insight and allows the public to present concerns carries enormous power.
Aleksandra Przegalińska critically about Elon Musk’s words
“What terrible nonsense! It’s clear that Silicon Valley has no interesting offer beyond digital alms (“basic income”) and automation of everything possible. Not only is it technologically impossible to do, but it is extremely demotivating , an irresponsible vision of a system that simply does not work. AI is supposed to cooperate with people, not replace them,” commented Aleksandra Przegalińska, a scientist, futurologist and expert in the field of AI, on Musk’s words from the Bletchley summit.
This is another time he speaks out about AI. He had been an opponent of it for many years and described it as a greater threat than nuclear war. At the same time, it did not stop him. Elon Musk was also one of the signatories of the letter calling for the suspension of work on the development of this technology.
The first version was also signed by Przegalińska. However, it stopped supporting the initiative when the content of the letter was changed and focused on a temporary ban on the development of AI, rather than introducing regulations and transparency in this area of research. Then she also developed the topic of Elon Musk’s relationship with artificial intelligence technology.
– The story with Elon Musk is much more complicated. He was an early investor in OpenAI (the company that created ChatGPT – ed.) and was friends with the company’s CEO Sam Altman. They’ve gone their separate ways and I think Musk is in quite a difficult situation today. It has to deal with resuscitating a social media – quite old – which is Twitter (today X – ed.), and the development of artificial intelligence calls into question the development of social media. If someone has such intuition and is the owner of a large social media platform, it may be in his interest that generative artificial intelligence does not develop and steal his business. So if I were to summarize it briefly, I would say that Musk is a little jealous and a little dissatisfied that he is not participating in the latest wave of technology creation, because he has always surfed high and far on such waves – said Aleksandra Przegalińska.
The expert also spoke critically about the threat of artificial intelligence. – For me, scaring AI is a problem because experts are providing quite hardcore driving to a society that has less knowledge about it. And this is done by the same “experts” who have not necessarily dealt with AI so far, and now they feel that they need to speak out, but in a somewhat demonic way: that a worst-case scenario is coming. And it is this spread of apocalypticism that we should be afraid of. Because so far, technological development shows that all this is not obvious, that the development trajectories of this technology are not predetermined, she said.
For me, it is very important that we have space to act and shape AI in different ways, and I really wouldn’t want us to deprive ourselves of agency. People are being presented with an apocalyptic scenario without telling them that it may develop completely differently
– says Aleksandra Przegalińska.
