Self-service checkouts in discount stores are intended to facilitate and speed up shopping and relieve the burden on traditional counters. In practice, however, it does not always look so rosy. However, according to customer reports, the machines installed in Biedronka have just become “smart”.
Biedronka has introduced smart cash registers. They recognize that a tomato is not a cucumber
One of the TikTok users showed how the cash registers work in a short video. As you can see in the video, the self-service checkout automatically recognizes bananas placed on the scale. After entering the “search by name or enter code” option, this fruit and several others are displayed at the top of the screen. The same applies to other fruits and vegetables and bread. As the author of the film suggests, the cameras installed at the checkout recognize a given object “by color” and thus suggest products that are similar in color.
This is a big help because after placing, for example, tomatoes on the scale, the cash register itself suggests several types of tomatoes available in the store, and the customer’s only task is to select a specific product. Therefore, you do not have to search through the entire list of all fruits and vegetables sold at Biedronka each time.
Internet users note in the comments that the new function has only been available recently and does not yet work in all Biedronka stores. Others claim that the functioning of the machines currently leaves much to be desired due to a large number of mistakes and many times you have to wait for the cashier’s help.
The new function is apparently also intended to eliminate possible errors when checking out products. If there are tomatoes on the scale and we manually select another product from the list, e.g. cucumbers, the machine stops the checkout and calls the salesperson. Only when the employee makes sure that the product on the scale matches that on the screen, does he unlock the cash register and shopping can continue.
On the other hand – as you might suspect – the new product is also intended to provide additional protection against dishonest customers who choose a product from the list that is similar in weight but cheaper than what they actually buy. As Internet users write, the machines automatically take photos of products placed on the scale and, after calling for help, display them on the screen to the intervening cashiers.
