VGC: PlayStation 5 with a removable disk drive was useless without the Internet
The new compact PlayStation 5 console will refuse to work without an Internet connection. This was reported by Video Games Chronicle (VGC).
Journalists came to this conclusion after studying the information on the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III disc box released for PS5. The requirements for running the game stated that an Internet connection was required when using a removable drive. Thus, the disc game will be useless if there is no network connection.
The description of the technology said that the console needs the Internet in order to confirm the originality of the components and set up a connection between the PS5 motherboard and the drive. According to journalists, they were very surprised by this requirement, since usually games on physical media can be run offline.
According to the authors, in the future Sony may manipulate this requirement – for example, disable the removable drive verification server after the end of support for the set-top box. Journalists contacted Sony for comment but did not receive a prompt response.
Sony announced a new version of the PlayStation 5 console in mid-October. The console came in two versions – with and without a removable disk drive.
