A group of more than forty plaintiffs from several American states have filed a lawsuit Goalowner of Facebook and Instagram, of causing harm to “the physical and mental health of young people.”
This was reflected in a document submitted to a California court.
“Meta exploited powerful and unprecedented technologies to … attract and ultimately entrap young people and adolescents for profit,” the attorneys general of the states where the complaint was filed told the prosecutor. AFP had access.
The decision has no political point, as plaintiffs from states governed by Democrats and Republicans are participating in the lawsuit.
Meta plans to charge up to 13 euros per month in Europe for using Instagram and Facebook without ads
The complaint states that Meta “concealed the ways in which these platforms exploit and manipulate their most vulnerable consumers” and “ignored the significant harm these platforms have caused to the mental and physical health of our nation’s young people.”
The company said it was “disappointed that attorneys general have chosen this path instead of working productively with industry companies to create clear, age-appropriate standards for the many applications used by teens.”
“We share the attorneys general’s commitment to providing teens with safe and positive online experiences, and have already introduced more than 30 tools to support teens and their families,” a spokesperson for the group said.
The legal action represents the result of investigations launched in 2021 into the methods of the two platforms, which are considered “addictive” by US authorities. (JO)
