A fundraiser organized in aid of Olympic legend Mary Lou Retton as she fights for her life in an intensive care unit has already generated $275,000 in donations.
Mary Lou Retton, 55, made history in 1984 as the first American woman to win all-around gold at the Olympic Games, also winning two silver and bronze medals that same year.
McKenna Kelley, one of Retton’s daughters, announced Tuesday that her mother is currently battling a rare form of pneumonia and has spent more than a week in the hospital. To cover medical costs, Kelley created a SpotFund account and implored the public to “help my mom continue to fight” the disease.
“Please help my mother keep fighting,” Kelley wrote. ‘Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not reveal all the details. However, I will say that she is not insured.
The young woman asked for public assistance in two ways: to pray for her mother’s health and if she could help us with the finances for the hospital bill.
