PlayStation 5 Slim later this year. This is what the new console looks like. But what happened to the price?

“The same immersive power. A new, slimmer size” – with these words Sony advertises the new version of the PlayStation 5 console, which is to be slightly smaller than the original. There is also something new. Some will have to spend several hundred zlotys more.

There has been a lot of talk on the Internet about PlayStation 5 for months – this time in the Slim version. Sony has remained silent on this issue, but three years have passed since the premiere of the new generation of consoles and it was clear that the company would finally decide to refresh the appearance or certain solutions in PS5. Now we know the exact specifications and price of the new console from Sony.

The slimmer version may have excess baggage. Drive attached separately

There was no grand premiere, and the console didn’t even get a new name, although most players will simply call it the “Slim” version. This word was used to describe slimmer versions of previous generations of Sony consoles.

The specification of the new version remains almost unchanged compared to the classic PS5 model. Sony only increased the SSD capacity from 825 GB to 1 TB. The difference may not be huge, but it is a nice addition. The appearance of the device has also been slightly modified and, above all, the size of the housing has been reduced. Sony declares that the volume of the PS5 “Slim” case is 30 percent smaller. smaller, and the weight of the console was reduced by 24%. compared to the traditional version with a drive and by 18 percent. compared to the Digital model (without drive).

The biggest change is that now all PS5 (Slim) consoles will be sold as digital versions. Sony has released an optional drive that can be connected to the console by covering it with an appropriate housing panel. A large bulge then forms on the side of the console, which – it must be admitted – looks very bad. Sony explains that this decision was dictated by the desire to provide “greater choice and flexibility.”

The drive will be sold as a set with the console or separately. Therefore, there is nothing stopping you from buying a PlayStation 5 and after some time deciding to buy an additional drive. After playing a few games, you can also dismantle it and resell it, recovering some of your money. Stores will also offer colorful casing covers, including matte black.

We know the prices of PlayStation 5. In Europe, you have to pay extra for the drive

Sony boasts that the new PlayStation 5 will be available during the holiday season, although – as the announcement shows – not everywhere. The new console will appear in some US stores in November, with sales expected to begin in the rest of the world “in the following months.” Moreover, as Sony declares, the new PS5 will appear on sale in place of the currently sold model only after its stocks are exhausted. So it looks like Sony won’t be able to launch PS5 before Christmas in most markets, which is quite a disappointment.

The PS5 “Slim” version without a drive is priced at EUR 449.99. The set with an attached drive costs EUR 549.99, so the difference is significant. The drive itself will be available for purchase for EUR 119.99, and the stand for placing the PS5 in a vertical position for EUR 29.99. Interestingly, in the US the difference between the digital version of PS5 and the drive version will be more than twice as small, as it will be only $50 ($449.99 or $499.99). The drive itself overseas will also be much cheaper, selling for $79.99.
