For some time now, the mObywatel application has allowed you to check your voting rights and voting place in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Apparently, cybercriminals decided to take advantage of this fact by encouraging people to download a fake application.
Counterfeit mObywatel application. It is used to take over bank accounts
Like , the CERT Polska team is warning against a new scam. Cybercriminals send text messages to Poles’ phones encouraging or informing about the alleged need to install the mObywatel application. Their content varies. – We receive an SMS with information that we need to complete formalities, check something, or pay an additional 50 cents – said Iwona Prószyńska from the CERT Polska Team on Program 1 of Polish Radio.
There is always a link in the message that redirects you to a scam website used to download a fake version of the application. After opening it, you are asked to log in to the system using your electronic banking data. By entering your customer ID and password there, you give this sensitive data to criminals who can use it to take over your bank account.
We should always approach links in text messages and e-mails with great caution. It is also always worth checking the website address, because crafted websites usually operate at a similar, but not identical, address to their real versions. It is always worth downloading applications for smartphones from official stores (Google Play and AppStore) and only from proven, trusted developers. The only entity offering the mObywatel application is the Ministry of Digitization.
