Many years ago, Microsoft promised that Windows 10 would be the last operating system with characteristic windows. However, in 2021, the company unexpectedly released Windows 11, which is currently the latest version of the system. Now it turns out that Microsoft is apparently considering releasing Windows 12 not as a product (one-time purchase), but as a service, for which you will have to pay a subscription fee. The German website Deskmodder configures an experimental version of Windows in the Canary channel, with traces that may suggest such an approach.

The code includes, among others: Windows version and subscription status information. The data from the file was then compared to the Windows 11 stable version 23H2 configuration file and no subscription information was found there. It is therefore possible that Microsoft is making some preparations to make the new Windows available for subscription.

This wouldn’t even be a big surprise, considering the fact that the American giant strongly focuses on the development of its cloud services (for several years, Office has been available as part of a subscription, e.g. Microsoft Office). Of course, this does not mean that such an idea for “Windows on subscription” will definitely come to fruition. It is also possible that Microsoft will offer a subscription only to a selected group of recipients or as an alternative option to purchasing the system in a box version.
