There is consternation, pain and outrage in the Dominican Republic. The bodies of six newborns were thrown at the gate of a cemetery.

According to journalist Guillermo García, the alarm was raised by neighbor Ángel Cuestas. He saw the body of a baby and called 911, but when police arrived they confirmed there were six bodies.

The shocking discovery took place on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at six in the morning.

The babies’ bodies were found wrapped in stretch paper (disposable). According to what was reported in El Caribe, the babies had pink and blue bracelets on their arms and legs, which made the scene more dramatic. In Listín Diario they added that the bodies were wearing disposable diapers.

There will be responsibilities: the police warn

The police, who already know the name of a suspect, emphatically stated: “There will be responsibilities for this irresponsible action.”

A report from the National Health Service, according to CDN 37, “explains that the director of Ciudad Juan Bosch Hospital advised that she delivered the bodies to a funeral home to give them a Christian burial.”

The police department indicates that they are making progress in the investigation with the installation of cameras, interviews with the medical staff of the health center, as well as a funeral home and even the Cristo Salvador cemetery.

Who are they looking for in the case of the six babies’ bodies?

In El Caribe they regret what happened and indicate that this “has exposed an inhumane practice and the violation of protocols for the treatment of babies who die in health centers and are not picked up by their parents.”

Due to the scandalous incident, “a person nicknamed ‘El Grillo’ is being searched,” said Colonel Diego Pesquiere, police chief.

The La Popular Funerary, to which Ciudad Juan Bosch Hospital said it had delivered the bodies, reported that a driver from the company took the bodies to an employee of the cemetery in Santo Domingo Este for burial, El Caribe reported.

What is being told is what is common, but “the funeral business owner explained that he is responsible for collecting the bodies and delivering them to the cemetery manager, who “forgot” to bury the babies.”

Pathologist Anyi Vicioso, quoted in Infobae América, reported that the bodies were four boys and two girls, Dominicans and Haitians.

Let “El Grillo” surrender

Virgilio Ureña, manager of the Cristo Salvador cemetery, asks “El Grillo” to surrender to the authorities, Listín Diario writes.

“El Grillo” is a mason, a gravedigger. His name is Hilario Pascual and he works for La Popular funeral home.

Ureña described to the aforementioned media what “El Grillo” did: he violated the registration protocol – which is done when a mason buries a corpse – to evade, according to the administrator’s impression, a tax of 1,400 pesos (about $25).

The director of the hospital involved in this controversy, Marielda Reyes, explained to Diario Libre that these baby deaths “have different causes and that some parents do not remove the bodies for various reasons, especially if they have limited economic resources. because of “what the health center has to pay for the funeral service.”

She said she was “surprised” by what happened because “they have a payment agreement for services so the bodies were given a dignified burial” and the funeral home had confirmed “that they had been buried.”

Users from the networks are asking to get to the bottom of this event, which has ‘no excuses’. Clotilde Aquino said: “Human dignity was lost.”
