A dozen or so days ago, Microsoft presented the new Copilot function, which, along with several other novelties, will be available to Windows 11 users. It is a new assistant that, based on the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence, will help users in everyday tasks from the computer operating system itself.
Ads are to appear in Windows 11. Microsoft hid them in an AI tool
It turns out, however, that this – undoubtedly useful and convenient – solution will contain an unpleasant surprise. Users who have already installed Windows 11 version 23H2 report that advertisements have appeared in the new tool – he noted. Tiles with advertising content are to appear after entering specific queries in the AI tool – e.g. a request for a tip on which gaming laptop to choose results in displaying related computer ads.
Of course, ads have been present in Windows 11 to a small extent before (although they were called suggestions), but their task was mainly to encourage the use of Microsoft services. These suggestions can also be easily turned off. This time, however, we are to receive product advertisements that direct to external stores. Fortunately – at least for the moment – ads only appear when using the AI tool embedded in the new version of the system.
Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t provided an option to easily turn off ads in Copilot. Moreover, it was not located anywhere in Windows settings. It will only be possible to disable the entire AI assistant. Microsoft intends to make all new features available to users around the world as part of the next major update of Windows 11. For now, Copilot is not available in the European Union due to local regulations, but the company is apparently already working on introducing appropriate changes.
