The Russians copied another company’s smartphone. And they advertise it as a “truly Russian phone”

It is almost certain that the Russian R-FON smartphone will have Asian roots. The device advertised as a “truly Russian smartphone” is a design copied from the Symphony brand from Bangladesh.

In August this year The Russian company ROSA announced that it is working on its own smartphone, which will be the perfect choice for citizens of this country. The smartphone has not yet gone on sale, but it is already known that it is a mere copy of the design from Bangladesh.

Russian smartphone from Bangladesh. There will be no revolution

Already during the announcement, it was clear that the Russians would not prepare a device that could compete with smartphones from Apple, Samsung or Xiaomi. The heart of the new Russian phone is to be the MediaTek Helio G99 processor with average performance, supported by 8GB RAM and 128GB of built-in memory. Additionally, there is a 6.7-inch LCD screen with an unknown resolution, a 5,000 mAh battery and three cameras.

Now it turns out that R-FON will not only not be a device worthy of much attention, but it will not even be Russian. As noted by Russian media, R-FON will not be ROSA’s own design. The smartphone was compared with the Helio 80 model by Symphony from Bangladesh and it turns out that both devices are almost identical.

There are practically no differences between R-FON and Helio 80 on the housing. The design is identical, even the arrangement of camera lenses and the LED lamp on the camera island is copied one to one from the Symphony design. Only the color of the housing was changed and the logo on the back of the smartphone was replaced. There are two rather cosmetic changes inside the phone. The camera has a resolution of 50 instead of 108 Mpix, and the RAM memory has been increased from 6 to 8 GB. The rest of the specifications remained unchanged.

The company responsible for R-FON said that the “handset” meets all the requirements to be called a Russian device. At the same time, he claims that he has “no information about the smartphone from Bangladesh”, so the obvious similarities are probably a coincidence. He also admits that “foreign components” were used to produce the device, but R-FON’s distinguishing feature is the installed proprietary operating system. The smartphone is scheduled to go on sale in Russia in early 2024 and then we will see what it really is like.
