9to5Mac: the release of the iPhone 15 was disrupted by reseller bots
Security experts have identified iPhone purchase bots run by resellers. This was reported by 9to5Mac.
According to Kasada specialists, after the release of new Apple smartphones, resellers became more active online. Speculators used automated programs to be the first to buy new devices and resell them. According to Kasada experts, interested people could earn “millions of dollars” in this way.
The company’s report states that a special bot made it possible to reserve various iPhone 15 models as soon as pre-orders opened on Apple’s website. To bypass the security mechanisms, resellers placed orders for several people. They then took the smartphones from the store and almost immediately sold them at a premium. Thus, the start of sales of Apple flagships was partially disrupted.
Kasada specialists estimated that in the most successful scenarios, one bot could process 2,500 applications for the purchase of Apple devices per day. With an estimated profit of $300 for each device resold, the reseller could earn $750,000. The conclusion is that the average person is powerless over the bot, since the latter can complete the purchase process in 0.2 seconds or even faster.
On September 22, Russian retailers began selling new Apple smartphones. It is noted that sales of the iPhone 15 started on the same day as the whole world.
