EU calls on Apple to open its ecosystem to competitors

Reuters: Apple was required to open its ecosystem to competitors in Europe

European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton called on Apple not to interfere with competition in the European Union (EU). Reuters reports this.

According to the agency, Breton recently met in Brussels with Apple CEO Tim Cook. The official demanded that the company open up its closely guarded ecosystem of hardware and software to competitors. It is unknown what Cook responded to Breton; Apple also declined to comment.

“The next challenge for Apple and other big tech companies under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) is to open their gates to competitors,” the commissioner told Reuters. Thierry Breton emphasized that iPhone owners should be able to use competitive services – be it browsers, app stores or e-wallets.

Breton also said that the security problems of the American company’s ecosystem are related to its closed nature. “EU regulation promotes innovation without compromising security and privacy,” he added.

Apple introduced the iPhone 15 series smartphones and other products at a presentation on September 12. The devices received a UBS-C port – apparently, this is how the company responded to the European Union’s requirement to equip gadgets sold in Europe with a single port.
