This Monday, the government of Nicaragua ordered the revocation of the legal status of the Central American Business Institute (Incae), a business school based in Matagua and Costa Rica.

Incae is an international business school, founded in 1964 with support from Harvard University and the Inter-American Development Bank.

They seize assets from a Jesuit university in Nicaragua after accusing it of being a “center of terrorism”

This established that the assets in Nicaragua were transferred to the State. A resolution from the Ministry of the Interior (Home Affairs) shows that the training center failed to submit its annual accounts between 2020 and 2022 and notes inconsistencies in the documents provided by the institute during the period 2015-2019 , in addition to the training center’s failure to meet the requirements to receive donations and register as foreign agents, as required by law.

The resolution, signed by Minister María Amelia Coronel Kinloch and published in the official newspaper La Gaceta, indicates that due to the non-compliance, the INCAE directors “have not promoted a policy of transparency and management of funds”, so it is not known whether the projects that are carried out are in line with its objectives as an organization.

During Daniel Ortega’s government, approximately 3,000 non-governmental organizations were ordered to close.

In a statement, the institution lamented this fact, noting that they “have been true to their mission of actively contributing to the sustainable development of Nicaragua and the region, and distinguishing themselves with transformative education to strengthen the economy and the environment : in more than 4,000 Incaists have graduated from the Nicaragua campus.”

The reactions at international level are not long in coming. One of these was that of President Guillermo Lasso, who indicated that his government condemns and regrets the withdrawal of legal status.

“This is an institution that educated thousands of Latin Americans and is today influenced by an authoritarian regime. We call on the international community to remain vigilant against the decisions of a government that violates the human rights of our Nicaraguan brothers,” he wrote in X. (JO)
