Several United States congressmen presented a resolution on Thursday apologizing for Washington’s role in this Augusto Pinochet’s coup in Chile and is pushing the government to release more documents about what happened.
The lawmakers expressed “deep regret for the contribution of the United States to the destabilization of Chile’s political institutions and constitutional process,” the text said.
Also because he contributed “to the consolidation of General Pinochet’s repressive military dictatorship”, the resolution adds, the day before the Chilean president, the left-wing Gabriel Boric, arrives in Washington after the UN General Assembly in New York have attended.
After a thousand days in power, when Salvador Allende (1970-1973) prepared to convene a plebiscite in an attempt to emerge from the acute political and economic crisis the country was experiencing. He was overthrown by the forces led by Pinochetwhich received the support of the United States in a context of the Cold War against Soviet influence.
Declassified documents
At Chile’s request, the State Department in recent weeks released fragments of two 1973 documents showing that former President Richard Nixon was aware of military plans to overthrow Allende.
But members of Congress believe Biden should go a step further.
“Full accountability” requires that “the remaining U.S. files relating to the events before, during and after the military coup be published and declassified,” the resolution said.
According to declassified files, Nixon ordered the intelligence community (CIA) to “make the economy scream” and covertly block Allende’s inauguration.
Under the supervision of National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, the CIA sought to foster a “coup climate” and “create the best possible conditions” to bring the military to power.
On Sept. On September 11, 1973, Salvador Allende, Chile’s democratically elected president, was overthrown in a US-backed military coup that ushered in a fascist government and cost thousands of Chilean lives. Today we honor the memory of Salvador Allende.

“We must make it clear that we regret our participation and are committed to supporting Chilean democracy,” the spokesperson said independent congressman Bernie Sanders, one of the initiators of the resolution along with Democrats Tim Kaine, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Joaquín Castro and Greg Casar.
Pinochet bead money
Chilean justice this week succeeded in confiscating $3.3 million from the family of former President Augusto Pinochet, almost twenty years after the legal process began.
In connection with the fiftieth anniversary of the coup in Chile, three time deposits at a banking institution were liquidated on September 11 and $3.3 million seized from dictator Augusto Pinochet was transferred to the account of the Administrative Society of the Judiciary. All this in the context of the Riggs case.
The Riggs case dates back to 2004 and stems from an in-depth investigation conducted in both Chile and the United States into the estate of Augusto Pinochet Ugarte. (JO)
