It is becoming more and more common to receive calls from unknown numbers on WhatsApp, Meta’s messaging application. While they can sometimes come from real people, a large portion of these calls have been found to come from “bots” or made by people with the intent to cheat a user.

There are several methods that scammers use to trick their victims into a WhatsApp call: they pretend to be a family member or friend who has changed their number and ask for money; they pretend to be an application support assistant and ask to send a security code so as not to lock your account (and what they do is use that code to log in from another device and access all of the user’s chats ); or they pose as recruiters and ask for bank account numbers.

You can avoid falling into these pitfalls by keeping a few things in mind: if the country code on their phone number is different from yours, or if you’ve never entered your details into the ‘company’ they’re calling you from, but somehow don’t have your data.

However, it can be tiring and annoying to receive and ignore these calls throughout the day. Therefore, it is recommended to enable an option that WhatsApp has to mute these calls.
