Millions of people around the world were able to observe it on the night of this Wednesday, August 30, 2023, the so-called ‘Super Blue Moon’the second full moon of August, a spectacle that will not be repeated until 2037.
This was the second full moon in August, hence the blue label. The satellite appeared larger and brighter than usual, given its proximity to Earth: 357,344 kilometers.
A Blue Moon and a Supermoon on the same night occur about every 10 years.although it won’t occur again for the next fourteen years, in the night sky in January and March 2037. A supermoon can also cause higher than normal tides.
The first full moon of August rose on August 1 and was the second of four consecutive supermoons.
On average, supermoons are about 16% brighter than an average moon. They also appear larger than the average full moon.
According to NASA, it is comparable to the size difference between a quarter and a nickel. The phenomenon occurs when the Moon’s orbit is closest to Earth, while the Moon is full.
The last of four consecutive supermoons this year will be the “harvest moon” on September 28. (JO)
