“I had to move on, but it was unbearably cruel”: Mother carried one of her twins dead in her womb and for weeks to save the other’s life

When she was 15 weeks pregnant, a woman and her partner were told that their children suffered from twin transfusion syndrome.

This, according to Antena 3, is “a serious complication affecting between 10% and 15% of identical twin pregnancies that share a placenta.”

The unexpected announcement was followed by an operation and even more painful news: one of the babies died. The mother – who was touched as hard as anyone can imagine – had to carry her dead child in her womb to save the other’s life.

Laura Pridding, from Wales, full of doubts and fears, did not want the other to die and got support from her husband to carry the pregnancy under those circumstances.

“It was unbearably brutal and the weeks that followed were the worst of our lives, but I had to move on to give George the best chance of survival,” Antena 3 reports of the woman.

The aforementioned Spanish media explained on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 that due to this twin transfusion syndrome, “one twin receives less blood than the other, for which the doctors suggested laser surgery.”

If the surgery is not performed, they say, “the two babies could die or about 60% of their brains could be damaged during childbirth due to a lack of blood supply.”

At 21 weeks pregnant, Laura Pridding from Wales noticed that the babies moved very little.

“They told me one of my babies had no heartbeat. I felt utter desperation, but I had to move on for George,” the Spanish medium said.

The baby was born via caesarean section at week 27. His cries echoed throughout the hospital. Laura later recounted, “George was born screaming and he was so small he could fit in the palm of my hand.”

This case is similar to the one that happened six years ago and was published in the Mirror.

When she was 20 weeks pregnant, a mother, Emma Dutton, was also told that she had lost one of her identical twins due to the same syndrome.

Emma carried her dead baby in her womb for 15 weeks so that her twin brother could survive, the British newspaper reported in April 2017.
