CNET: Smartwatch bands may contain dangerous bacteria

The straps of smart watches and fitness bracelets can contain dangerous germs and bacteria. This is reported by CNET.

Media journalists studied a study published in the journal Scientific Research. In it, an international team of scientists described what bacteria can be on the surface of the straps of smart watches and fitness trackers if users forget to clean them.

The experts tested straps in the laboratory, which they received from 20 random users of wearable accessories. The bracelets were plastic, silicone, leather, metal and fabric. It turned out that in 85 percent of cases, the straps contained Staphylococcus aureus (Staph aureus), 60 percent – Escherichia coli (E. coli), 30 percent – Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa).

The authors noted that bracelets made of rubber and plastic turned out to be the most contagious, while the smallest number of bacteria was found on accessories made of gold and silver. In conclusion, the scientists noted that bracelets for smartwatches and fitness trackers should be cleaned regularly with a disinfectant spray or wet wipes containing ethanol.

In July, it became known that demand for smartwatches had grown in Russia. In the period from January to June 2023, the products of little-known Chinese brands, Apple and Xiaomi, enjoyed particular popularity.
