A migrant woman and four childrenincluding an 11-month-old baby, died on Monday in two shipwrecks off the coast of Greece, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said.
The first shipwreck occurred early Monday morning at 3am (00:00 GMT) off the island of Samos, in the Aegean Sea, near the Turkish coast.
A Coast Guard patrol boat rescued 37 people, including a deceased woman, said the port police and Greek government spokesman.
Hours later, at around 04:00 GMT, a Coast Guard patrol boat “located and rescued 22 foreigners off the island of Lesbos,” including four dead, the port police said in a brief statement.
The victims are an eight-year-old boy and three girls aged eleven months, eight years and fourteen years, Marinakis specified in a press appearance.
The number of migrants arriving in Greece by sea has increased this year and especially in the month of August.
