iPhone 15 getting closer. Here’s everything we know about him. USB-C, the new Ultra model and a hellishly high price

There are only a few weeks left until the premiere of the iPhone 14. So we decided to gather all the information about the latest Apple smartphone in one place. We already know one thing for sure: its price will knock us off our feet.

The premiere of new iPhones usually takes place in the fall. This year will be no different. Everything indicates that the iPhone 15 will be presented in the second or third week of Septemberand the most likely date of the Apple conference it’s tuesday 12 september. There are many indications that – just like last yearFour iPhone models will be available for sale:

  • iPhone 15 – 6.1″ Super Retina XDR display (LTPS, 60 Hz);
  • iPhone 15 Plus – 6.7″ Super Retina XDR display (LTPS, 60 Hz);
  • iPhone 15 Pro – 6.1″ Super Retina XDR display (ProMotion);
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra – 6.7″ Super Retina XDR Display (ProMotion)

The greatest unknown remains the most powerful, and at the same time the most expensive iPhone 15 model. A number of sources report that Apple intends to change its name. According to Andrew O’Hara of Apple Insider, last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max will be replaced by the iPhone 15 Ultra.

It is worth recalling that in February Mark Gurman from Bloomberg announced the appearance of the Ultra variant. However, he suggested at the time that it would be an additional fifth iPhone model, not an alternative to the Pro Max model. Who is right here? We’ll find out in just a few weeks.

the aforementioned iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra will go on sale Later than other models, and its premiere may be postponed even by a month. This is due to the fact that Apple will use an improved camera system here – compared to other variants of the iPhone.

DESIGN: The dynamic island stays. It’s time to come to terms with it

When it comes to the design of the new iPhones, we should not expect major changes in this aspect. Such took place last year, when the infamous notch, i.e. the indentation in the upper edge of the screen, was replaced by the so-called. dynamic island. It hides the front True Depth camera lens and several other sensors. To mask its presence, Apple cleverly integrated this area into the notification system and into the applications themselves.

Dynamic Island, like the previously mentioned notch, was not to everyone’s taste. However, if someone was hoping that Apple would give up this solution after a year, I have bad news for him: The dynamic island will return. What’s more, this feature will be present not only – as it was last year – on Pro models, but also on all four variants of the iPhone 15.

This year’s Pro models may get narrower bezels compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. That the casing of more expensive iPhone variants can be made made of titanium, and not – as in previous years – of stainless steel. Apple used a titanium case, for example, in the Apple Watch Ultra.

Some sources also report that Apple may abandon an element that has been one of the distinguishing features of the iPhone since the dawn of time. It’s about the physical smartphone mute slider. It would be replaced by touch strip located on the edge of the device.

There is also speculation about the addition of a multi-functional buttonwhich will trigger an action selected by the user – e.g. turning on the flashlight or taking a screenshot.

USB-C: Hell has frozen over! Apple abandons the Lightning connector

Perhaps the loudest novelty that is talked about in the case of the iPhone 15 is the transition from the proprietary Lightning charging standard to Apple’s competitors USB-C. This is the result of the decision of the European Parliament, which requires that all smartphones sold in the EU from autumn 2024 be equipped with a USB type C connector.

Theoretically, Apple could wait another year with the transition to USB-C and introduce this change with the premiere of the iPhone 16. The Cupertino company, however, does not want to wait. All signs in the sky and earth indicate that the iPhone 15 will be the first Apple smartphone with a USB-C port.

According to MacRumors, a company from Cupertino wants to celebrate this change in a special way. In the box with the iPhone, in place of the standard (and at the same time not very durable – as the writer of these words also found out) plastic Lightning cable, we will find a reinforced braided USB-C cable – and in a color version corresponding to the variant of the device we have chosen.

It turns out, however, that Apple may have a plan to – despite changing the charging standard – maintain control over the market of chargers and other accessories for Apple.

According to one of the best-informed sources on the Cupertino-based company, Apple had already commissioned the Taiwanese concern Foxconn to start production of accessories operating on the basis of the USB-C connector. It’s about, among others o EarPods and iPhone charging cables. All these devices are to be equipped with MFi (Mad For iPhone) certification.

Only cables with this certificate would guarantee fast charging of the device as well as fast data transfer. This, in turn, would discourage iPhone users from using “non-original” accessories without MFi certification.

SCREEN: iPhone 15 and 15 Plus still without Pro Motion and AoD

All iPhone 15 models will stay equipped with Super Retina screens XDR (OLED). Unfortunately, there are many indications that only the Pro variants will offer support for ProMotion Display technology with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. In the case of the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, we will still be stuck at 60 Hz. It must be made clear that in 2023 it starts to sound a bit distasteful.

Also a function Always-On-Display (always on screen) will appear only on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max/Ultra – which will further outline the differences between cheaper and more expensive models.

SPECS: The A17 Bionic chip will “break” benchmarks

Not so long ago all iPhone variants within a single generation received the same processor. This situation changed last year when the iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max debuted with the new A16 Bionic chip, and the iPhone 14 / Plus – with the older A15 Bionic chip.

It will be similar this year as well. Only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra will get a completely new layout A17 Bionic, which – for the first time in the history of the series – will be made in the 3 nm technological process. The other models will receive the A16 chip.

As reported by MacRumors, TSMC has been working on improving the 3nm process for a long time. It is estimated that the new layout can offer an increase in efficiency by 10-15 percent while reducing energy consumption by about 30 percent.

CAMERA: iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra with new periscope lens

When it comes to the camera, the biggest changes are to take place with the iPhone 15 Pro Max or Ultra. As reported by market analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the telephoto lens in the most expensive variant of the iPhone will be equipped with a completely new periscope lens systemthat will allow you to get even six times optical zoom.

Experts also predict that both Pro models will receive improved LiDAR scanner, created in cooperation with Sony, which is supposed to be more energy efficient. The main camera in the standard iPhone 15 is to receive a wider f/1.7 aperture, which will improve the quality of photos in more difficult lighting conditions.

BATTERY: Apple took care of more capacious cells

According to leaks reportedly from people working at the Foxconn factory in China (where most iPhones are made), Apple used iPhone 15 more capacious cells. The change compared to last year’s iPhones is to be significant and noticeable in the results of working time on a single charge. And this is the case with each of the four versions.

calculates that the biggest improvement will occur in the basic version of the iPhone 15, which will receive a cell with a capacity 3877mAh, i.e. 18 percent larger (compared to 3279 mAh in the iPhone 14). The iPhone 15 Pro is to receive a battery 3650mAh (larger by 14 percent compared to 14 Pro).

Also by 14 percent. the battery capacity of the iPhone 15 Plus will improve – from 4325 to exactly 4912mAh, which means that this variant will be there again could boast the most capacious battery of all Apple smartphones. The smallest improvement – about 12 percent. – it will happen in the case of the iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra – from 4323 to 4852mAh.

PRICE: It was expensive, is more expensive, and will be even more expensive

Despite rampant inflation and rising component costs, Apple did not decide to raise the prices of new iPhones last year. Of course, we are talking about the US market, mainly due to the significant weakening of the Polish currency against the US dollar.

Tim Long shows that prices of this year’s iPhone models will go up and significantly. Based on data from Apple’s component suppliers, Long predicts the price of the iPhone 15 Pro will increase by about $100, while the price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra could increase by as much as $200.

If these predictions come true, the iPhone 15 price list will be as follows:

  • iPhone 15: $799 (unchanged);
  • iPhone 15 Plus: $899 (unchanged);
  • iPhone 15 Pro: up to $1,099 (up ~$100);
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra: Up to $1,299 (up ~$200).

Currently, it is difficult to precisely determine how this will translate into iPhone prices in Poland, as customs duties, VAT and the USD exchange rate must also be taken into account. However, it is safe to assume that at such prices in Poland we will pay over PLN 7,000 for the basic iPhone 15 Pro model, and for the cheapest iPhone 15 Pro Max model – even around PLN 8,500. To say it’s expensive is basically saying nothing.

an analyst at Wedbush and one of the best-informed sources on the subject of Apple, estimated that the Cupertino-based company could raise the price of the iPhone 15 by $ 100-200.
