You hum a song and YouTube finds it. This may be a hit, but there’s also bad news

Google is testing a new song recognition feature on YouTube. Just hum a song and the platform will recognize and search for it in its resources. Unfortunately, there is also bad news.

The Internet giant already allows you to recognize songs with the help of Google Assistant. You can find a fragment of a song listened to, for example, on the radio, previously recorded or hummed. Now the company wants to go a step further by allowing us to hum songs on YouTube as well.

YouTube will recognize and find the song. Even if you hum a piece

A brand new feature is being tested in the YouTube Android app that will allow us to easily recognize a song, even if we only remember a small part of it. Google on the support page that such a possibility is currently being tested on smartphones of a limited number of testers, which means that in some time it may appear to all users.

The function on YouTube will not only allow you to recognize a previously recorded or listened to a song on the radio, but also hum a small fragment. The only limitation is that you need to hum for at least three seconds for YouTube to recognize the song. Google already recognizes humming (at least in English) in the Assistant, but it requires you to sing at least about 10 seconds, which can be quite problematic.

What’s more, after recognizing the title, YouTube is supposed to automatically redirect the user to search results related to a given song, so that we can easily watch, for example, the official music video. Humming recognition will be hidden under the microphone icon for searching videos by voice, but Google is not revealing when it will appear for everyone.

YouTube will make it harder to scroll through ads

Unfortunately, these are not the only tests the company conducts on its YouTube platform. Soon, the ability to skip ads in the free version of the site will be slightly more difficult. The dedicated spot scrolling button will be made smaller and semi-transparent, making it harder to see against the background of the ad.

Google explains that the change is intended to improve the appearance of the player, but it is not difficult to guess that this is not the only reason. For a long time, the giant has been doing what it can to encourage users of the free version of YouTube to buy a Premium subscription.
