Service shutdown plan DVD Netflix athe American streaming giant announced a few months ago. The company decided to do so due to the lack of further prospects for this market. As reported by Variety, recently online DVD rental accounted for less than 1 percent of revenue generated by Netflix.
At the same time, the company decided to honor faithful subscribers who used this service to the end. A few days ago, Netflix announced that customers (- US users only) can receive free package with 10 DVD movies (they will be chosen randomly). The films will be sent on September 29, which is the last day of the rental’s operation.
After 25 years of mail-in movies, we’re nearing the end of our final season. We appreciate you wanting to share your movie nights with us until the last day
Netflix wrote in an email to subscribers.
Netflix will send customers free movies on DVD. They won’t have to return them
However, Netflix’s sympathetic gesture raised a number of legal doubts. It wasn’t clear if the 10-DVD package was a gift or if subscribers would have to return the movies to Netflix after a month – as with previously rented items.
Even lawyers have spoken who specialize in US commercial and entertainment law. for example, it stated that, in principle, Netflix cannot resell or give away its DVDs to customers, as the company originally received them under licensing agreements with the movie studios that own them.
On Tuesday, Netflix itself spoke about the matter, which decided to reassure its customers.
By the way, we have happy news in response to the emerging information: We will not charge for CDs that are not returned after September 29th. Enjoy the latest shipments as long as you like
– we read in the entry posted on the website X.
At the moment, it’s hard to tell whether Netflix has reached an agreement with the copyright holders of the movies or has found another way to get around the licensing issue. For the company’s customers, however, it does not matter much – the main thing is that they do not have to return the discs received as a gift.
