Jacinto began to lose vision eight years ago now. They told him it was macular degeneration associated with age. In other words, a part of his retina, the one that allows us to read or recognize ours, was damaged.
Now, the investigation of Spanish Miguel Flores Bellver, from the University of Colorado, gives light to tackle this disease with an important finding. “They have discovered that there are vesicles that accumulate that carry toxic substances,” explains professor of cell biology Nicolás Cuenca.
When these photoreceptors degenerate, vision is losing. Knowing now how toxic substances reach that part of the damaged retina, it is possible to prevent advancement of blindness in older people.
One more step towards a cure for an ailment that affects 300 million people in the world.
