Japan and the United States are to jointly develop a new weapon to combat hypersonic missiles, citing reports from the Japanese newspaper “Yomiuri Shimbun”. The two countries are expected to agree on the details of their cooperation later this week.
Japan and the US are to jointly develop an innovative defense system
The main purpose of the new system is to destroy hypersonic missiles from China, Russia and North Korea. Hypersonic missiles are a type of weapon that is now heavily developed, capable of moving at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (6174 km/h, which is about 5 times the speed of sound). Not only are they incredibly fast, but they can also fly low to the ground (which makes it difficult for radar to pick them up) and maneuver in flight. The Japanese-American system is supposed to catch such missiles that will be able to break through the missile defense. They are therefore much more difficult to detect and destroy than ballistic missiles that follow a predictable trajectory.
Joe Biden is due to meet Fumio Kishida (Japan’s Prime Minister) and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol at a tripartite summit in Camp David, Maryland, a Japanese newspaper reported, without disclosing his sources. Collaboration can be one of the topics of these conversations.
As noted by Reuters, in January the US and Japan began working together to develop a missile interceptor, and in the past have jointly developed long-range weapons capable of reaching suborbital missiles. The Japanese are currently mounting the appropriate guns on ships stationed in the Sea of Japan. If Biden and Kishida agree to each other’s terms, this will be the second missile-weapons collaboration.
