Already in September 2023, Meta will retire one of the functions on Messenger. It’s about the ability to handle SMS using the application. The company decided to withdraw the option, which had been available since 2016. “Users will not be able to use Messenger to send and receive SMS messages over the cellular network. The change will come into force after the update scheduled for September 28, 2023” – reads the official Meta message sent to users.
Messenger will lose an important feature
The option to send and receive text messages using the Messenger app was first introduced in 2012. Apparently, however, it did not meet the company’s expectations, as it was discontinued a year later. The idea came back in 2016. Back then, users could send SMS via Messenger again. Now – after seven years – the option is removed again. However, it is not known whether it will return in a new, improved version or whether the giant has decided to give it up completely.
Meta is already recommending that users make changes to their smartphones. If we have Messenger set as the default SMS program, it is worth modifying it now to get used to the changes.
