Have you heard of the EAD to work in the United States? This is an essential procedure that you must perform as it will allow you to work and start a new life. The EAD is the Employment Authorization Document, “a card required by all foreigners who want to work in that country”.

The EAD is an official government certificate that, according to Depor, gives you access to a job with benefits such as promotion, applying for better positions, gaining residency, among others.

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) reports this on its website how important is the EAD or work permit for all: “U.S. employers must ensure that all of their employees, regardless of citizenship or national origin, are permitted to work in the United States.

One way to prove you are authorized to work in the United States for a specified period of time is with an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766/EAD).

Who must process the EAD or work permit in the United States

It is necessary if:

You have a non-immigration status that allows you to be in the United States but does not allow you to work in the United States without first applying for a work permit from USCIS (such as a student with an F-1 or M-1 visa).

You do not need to apply for an EAD if you are a lawful permanent resident. Your green card (Form I-551, Permanent Residency Card) proves your work permit. You also don’t need to apply for an EAD if you have a nonimmigrant visa that authorizes you to work for a specific employer (for example, if you have an H-1B, L-1B, O, or P visa).

And if you still don’t have an EAD permit

You are not allowed to work in the United States without permission. In Depor, they remember that it can have negative consequences when seeking legal status in the country and future immigration applications.

They also point out that “most employers will not hire people without a valid EAD” as this is an “official government certificate”.

What risks do you run if there is no work permit:

Can the work permit be extended in the United States?

The answer is offered by the USCIS:

If the person is still eligible to apply for a work permit or has a work permit due to their immigration status or circumstances, but their EAD is expiring or has expired, they must apply for EAD renewal using a new Form I-765 along with the required fee (if required), unless a fee waiver has been filed and approved. In general, you cannot apply to renew your EAD more than 180 days before your original EAD expires.

EAD card application fee

Form I-765 applicants must pay a processing fee of $410. However, depending on your category, USCIS may also charge an additional $85 fee per photo, fingerprint, and signature, the site points out es.ivisa.com.
