City Hall of Amsterdam passed a motion on Thursday closes a major cruise ship terminal from the city center, the city confirmed to the agency AFP.

The decision adds something to a long list of measures that Amsterdam has taken to combat mass tourism.

The motion has been passed, but the exact result of the vote has not yet been announced, a city council source said.

Polluting cruise ships are at odds with our city’s sustainable ambitions”, states in a statement the centre-right party D66, which is at the basis of the motion and which governs the city together with the social democrats of the PvdA and the environmental activists of GroenLinks.

The city hall of Amsterdam, the largest city in the Netherlands, launched several measures to restore tranquility to the residents of the historic centerfor example, by banning cannabis smoking on the streets of the red light district or by campaigning to discourage British tourists from visiting the city solely to consume alcohol and drugs.

Amsterdam thus joins the city of Venice (Italy), another tourist attraction of the world that years ago banned the access of cruise ships to its waters, after protests from residents and environmental organizations against the huge ships, which threatened the habitat of the lagoon and especially the delicate and vast urban heritage of the place.
