Meta (the owner of Facebook) recently launched its new social network (Threads), which is designed to steal users from Twitter. Now it’s trying to improve Facebook so it can better compete with video platforms – primarily TikTok and YouTube. If you’ve had enough of annoying, self-playing videos, we have bad news – there will only be more of them.

Meta boasts that “video is the foundation of Facebook” (surprisingly, not posts and photos anymore). Short videos can be published on the platform since 2007, almost from the very beginning, and Facebook users apparently love to watch them. That’s why the Californian social media giant decided to prepare some new products that will allow even more videos to appear on Facebook.
The first and most important thing is the disappearance of the existing Facebook Watch tab, in which videos were displayed. In its place, Facebook Video will appear, where we are to find all the videos on the platform. Meta says it will be “one-stop-shop for everything video-related on Facebook.” There will also be the so-called reels and short clips, which so far popped up in random places on the platform, making it difficult to use the site. Now in Videos, all Facebook videos should be displayed in one row – shorter clips, longer videos and reels. The user’s task will only be to scroll the screen, watching subsequent materials from the platform.

The new place for video is also supposed to be more intuitive to use. The tab will, of course, still be personalized in terms of the interests of a particular user (although so far the algorithms have dealt with this task on average) and it is still divided into several sections – e.g. “Live”, “Rolls” and “Music”. It will appear soon next to the main card (so-called Feed) so that we always have it at hand. There will also be an exploration section with a clip search bar.
Further facilitations already apply to the creators of videos displayed on Facebook. Meta decided to invest in a video editor for these reels. Now, reel recorders will be able to easily voice over, overlay text, and add and match music to their clips right at the video publishing level. There will also be a quick editor that allows you to easily trim, speed up or undo videos. All this is to make the skates even better and attract our attention more.
Even more interesting, Facebook will finally start supporting HDR. Creators will be able to upload videos recorded in this standard, and viewers will see videos with a higher dynamic range, regardless of what device they use. Meta claims that today millions of videos uploaded to Facebook are recorded in HDR anyway. The change, however, will only appear in rolls for now, but – – it is supposed to be the first step towards introducing HDR support across the entire platform.
The last novelty is to be greater integration of Facebook and Instagram. By adding accounts to both of these services in the Account Center, you will also be able to view and comment on Instagram reels directly in the Facebook app. Meta points out, however, that this is just the beginning and soon more features for creators will appear on its flagship social network.
