YouTube is testing a new feature it copied from TikTok. Nice, but doesn’t work for me

YouTube has been allowing you to speed up your videos for a long time, but it takes longer than it should to dig into this feature. Tests are currently underway, thanks to which the video will be able to play faster after one click, similar to TikTok. Feel, however, that this is still only a test function.

Video acceleration has changed my life. Literally, because I didn’t listen to podcasts before, they were too slow for me, I couldn’t focus on them. And then there was acceleration. But to this day, I’m annoyed that it takes three clicks to dig up this feature on YouTube. Like the “save” function, the speedup is hidden, prioritizing buttons like “remix”, “download” and “clip”, which I hardly ever use. he finally seemed to think that perhaps the basic functions should be more accessible. Unfortunately, the implementation of the idea is lame, although it must be admitted that it is still in the testing phase.

YouTube copies the ability to speed up directly from TikTok

On we can – like on YouTube – speed up the video manually, through the settings. But you can also hold the screen on the side, so that until you release your finger from the display, the video will play twice as fast. The same solution is now available for YouTube Premium users in experimental features (click your profile in the top right corner > Settings > Try new features). After turning on this mode, in theory, just hold your finger anywhere on the screen to make the video twice as fast. In theory, because on my Android this function does not work. i, he also failed to enable it on an android phone, everything worked on .

For people like me – and I’m guessing from articles and comments on the Internet that there are more – accelerated playback by holding down the screen makes little sense. I use this option rather for longer videos, then I prefer to go into the settings and speed up the video manually, rather than hold the screen for half an hour or an hour. This feature makes more sense on TikTok, where the recordings are much shorter. But YouTube didn’t implement it in Shorts, the answer to the tiktok format. The only benefit of such acceleration seems to be the ability to quickly scroll to find the moment we are interested in. So it’s a competitive option for scrolling by double-tapping to the right or left of the video being played, because thanks to the acceleration, at least we don’t miss anything.

In experimental features you will find two more options. Until August 5, you can test the ability to lock the screen while watching. This is quite a useful feature but again a bit hidden in the settings while it provides a padlock in a convenient place accessible by one click. On YouTube, again, a useful option that should be easily accessible is unnecessarily hidden. You can check out the long-press acceleration until August 13, as well as the third experimental feature, which is larger preview images when scrolling. Only one of these options can be enabled at a time.
