A key structure for Russiain the middle of the war in Ukraineit is the Kerch Bridge, which was bombed early Monday morning by what the Russians describe as “naval drones”.

The Kerch Bridge connects Russia to Crimea, the region originally part of Ukraine and annexed in 2014. in an operation considered illegal by more than 100 countries. The bridge not only represents Russian power, but also it acts as a supply route and reinforcement for Russian troops in the territories they occupy in Ukraine.

Ukraine will join NATO if it “meets the conditions,” the organization says

But this bridge woke up and collapsed from the explosions, which Moscow attributes to Kiev, indefinitely interrupting mobilization between both areas. The human consequence was the death of two civilians.

Vladimir Konstantinov, head of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea, wrote on his Telegram channel: “Tonight, the Kiev terrorist regime committed a new crime: it attacked the Crimean bridge”.

Although Ukraine has not yet admitted responsibility for the explosion, this attack is very similar to others carried out by the country at war and would mark a new phase in the international conflict.

Vladimir Putin “has already lost the war,” Joe Biden says of the conflict with Ukraine

The symbolism of the Kerch Bridge

Unlike occupied territories such as Kherson and Zaporizhia, Crimea has more meaning for Ukrainians. Since its annexation in 2014, Russian citizens have settled in Crimea and consider it definitively part of Russia.

After its construction, the Kerch Bridge, more than a transportation route, was a symbol of the annexed region.

“Crimea, the bridge, the beginning. Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything occupied by Russia must be expelled,” said Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to Volodymyr Zelenskythe president of Ukraine.

Responses from Ukrainian officials show satisfaction with the attack, which is a major blow to the Kremlin.

Ukraine’s strategy

Everything indicates that Ukraine’s strategy is to isolate the areas occupied by the Red Army, preventing them from getting the supplies and reinforcements they need.

El Confidencial reports that one of the recent Ukrainian attacks was the bombing of railways in Tokmak, in the area between Melitopol and Donetsk, and the main supply route between the Russian-controlled east and the occupied areas in the south.

Ukraine also bombed a Russian military airport in Saki, Crimea.

As the conflict escalates, Zelensky refuses to negotiate with Putin as long as Ukrainian territory remains occupied.
