Since midnight your smartphone is your ID card. “No need to carry a plastic one anymore”

– It will no longer be necessary to carry a plastic ID card with you, because everyone will have a statutory obligation to accept mID – this is how the representative of the Minister of Digitization says about the new tool that can be downloaded to a smartphone. But for now the application will not work in banks.

The mObywatel 2.0 application is now available for download. The new version of the government tool contains a novelty. It’s about mDowod, i.e. the electronic equivalent of an ID card.

It will have a different expiration and issue date as well as a number and series than the so-called. plastic proof. It will be available only online in the mObywatel application. It will no longer be necessary to carry a plastic ID with you, because everyone will have a statutory obligation to accept mID. But it is worth emphasizing that this does not exempt citizens from the obligation to have a traditional ID card

– Michał Kalinowski, the plenipotentiary of the Minister of Digitization for the mObywatel application, explained in an interview with the Polish Press Agency before the launch of the new application. We know what the application will look like thanks to the entry posted on social media by the Minister of Digitization Janusz Cieszyński.

At the beginning, the application was supposed to be just a minor modification, and in the end it turned out to be a completely new application, built almost from scratch. The most important new features are primarily recognition everywhere with the three exceptions it provides. However, as a rule, in the office, at the notary public, when dealing with another person, company, if we want to rent a kayak, conclude a contract, we will be able to use mObywatel everywhere

– said Janusz Cieszyński.

mObywatel 2.0, with mDowod inside. An electronic document almost like the plastic one

This means that in almost all formal situations in Poland, electronic data can be used to confirm identity. The regulations equate the digital ID card available in mObywatel with a traditional ID card.

The mObywatel application can be used by any adult who has a valid ID card, a trusted profile and a smartphone with the current Android or iOS system. The new regulations also facilitate logging in to state services using the application. In addition, local governments can add their local, electronic documents for residents to mObywatel.

The electronic ID card does not work at the bank yet. But that will change

For now, we will not use the electronic identity card – mDowodu – in the bank. This is one of the three exceptionswhere the application does not work. However, this functionality will be available from September 1 this year. Using the mObywatel application is voluntary. People used to a traditional ID card can still use it in everyday matters.

Two other exceptions – digital ID will not allow us to cross the border. We will not use it when applying for an ID card. It is also worth remembering that the application does not work abroad – a hotelier in Greece or a police officer in Germany is not obliged to recognize it.

The functions of the mObywatel application will be extended. This week, the government adopted an amendment to the e-administration act, which provides, for example, for the possibility of issuing an electronic power of attorney or reserving the PESEL number. Parliament will take up the legislation soon.

In the new version of the mObywatel application, a temporary driving license will also be available. This functionality will be added in August.
