A unique situation is taking place on the Californian beacheswhere a female sea otter _identified as Otter 841_, is wanted by authorities after she played in surfer incidents.
In general, these animals usually do not pose a threat to surfers, but now Otter 841 has become a fierce competitor for avid boardmasters trying to catch some waves.
Videos show the roughly five-year-old otter hopping on surfboards, pushing his owners aside and basking in the sun as he waits for the swell to come in Santa Barbara.
Most do not consider this a major problem, but the otter is uncomfortable. Three tables stolen by her have been recorded. For this reason, conservationists are looking to move it to another location.
“Due to the increasing risk to public safety, a team… trained in capturing and handling sea otters has been deployed to attempt to capture and relocate themsaid a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Otter 841 first started climbing surfboards in 2021 and over time it has become bolder.
It is not known what causes this behavior in this species, although the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Fish Department has explained that it “may be associated with hormonal fluctuations or being fed by humans.”
Joon Lee, 40, a software engineer, was the victim of one of his robberies on Monday while surfing Steamer Lane, a popular surfing spot in Santa Cruz. “I tried to paddle away, but couldn’t get very far before he bit my oar.he said to the New York Times.
The animal then climbed on top of the board and began biting and tearing off pieces.
“I tried to get him out by flipping the board and pushing off, but for some reason he was so fixated on my surfboard that he kept attacking,” said Lee.
Last month, 16-year-old Noah Wormhoudt had to jump off his board when Otter 841 approached him. “He seemed friendly so we felt comfortable with that. It was quite a nice experiencesaid. “The otter caught some good waves,” he added.
However, Gena Bentall, director and chief scientist at Sea Otter Savvy, said so contact with people is dangerous, as if someone was bitten, the otter will have to be euthanized.
Officials hope to return the otter to the Monterey Bay Aquarium before transferring it to another.
