A resolution from the Austrian parliament gives the green light to authorities to confiscate and confiscate the vehicles of drivers who excessively exceed the speed limits in that country since March 2024.

The measure provides for progressive penalties given the seriousness of the offence, so if a vehicle repeatedly exceeds 60 km/h in the city, the vehicle could be impounded and auctioned.

However, if the speed in urban areas is 80 km/h, the seizure can take place immediately.

If the vehicle with which the offense was committed does not belong to the driver, the driver may be banned from using the vehicle.

Moreover, the owner of the car can no longer lend it to the offender.

The measure requires an amendment to the law, although the withdrawal of the vehicle will depend on the official’s criteria.

Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler has indicated that in the event that a vehicle is auctioned, 70% of the amount will go to a road safety fund and the rest to the city where the offense was committed.

To justify the measure, Gewessler recalled that so far this year, 142 people have died in road accidents in Austria.
