The Federal Bureau of Prisons, for its part, indicated that an inmate was attacked at 2:35 p.m. (6:35 p.m. GMT) Sunday at Coleman II Maximum Security Prison, but would not identify those involved.
The prison’s medical staff quickly intervened to save his life, it added in a statement.
Nassar admitted to sexually assaulting athletes while working at the US Gymnastics Federation, Michigan State University and at a gym in Lansing, in the same state. Among those affected were Olympic gold winners Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney.
The doctor was arrested in 2016 following an investigation by Michigan State University police, where Nassar practiced medicine.
A $380 million deal was reached with the federation. Michigan State University reached a $500 million settlement with hundreds of Nassar victims in 2018.
