The government of The Netherlands has issued a new provision for schools and colleges. This stipulates that students should not bring electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets or smartwatches to class, as they are distracting and lead to poor student performance.

The Ministry of Education has agreed with the sector councils, educational associations and parent representatives that mobile phones, tablets or smartwatches will no longer be allowed in the classroom from 1 January.

The ministry stressed that those devices should only be used if it is really necessary, for example if it is necessary to improve digital skills or if the class justifies their use. “You can no longer see video of it TikTok message a classmate during class or share a photo via Snapchat,” the entity said.

At the moment this is only a national guideline, but no law. That is why educational institutions must make agreements with parents and pupils about the way in which this provision is handled. However, the school may choose to completely refuse the use of these devices.

Students who depend on their telephone for medical reasons or due to a disability are allowed to use itAdjusted agreements are made for centers that offer special education. Other institutions such as universities and higher education centers should not follow this provision.
