Sony is expected to release a “slimmed down” version of the PlayStation 5 console later this year. This is the result of court documents revealed during the ongoing legal battle between the Japanese company and Microsoft.

The fate of the largest acquisition in the history of the video game industry hangs in the balance. In early 2022, Microsoft announced a plan to buy Activision Blizzard for almost $70 billion. This deal has still not materialized, however, because Microsoft’s main rival in the gaming market, Sony, claims that it would make the American company a monopoly.

Currently, proceedings are pending before the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that will decide the fate of this gigantic transaction. Microsoft and Sony have been throwing arguments to prove their point for many weeks.

A side effect of this legal skirmish is the appearance in the public sphere of documents that – under other circumstances – would never see the light of day. , the acquisition of which was considered (and perhaps still considered) by the giant from Redmond.

This week, more Microsoft documents leaked to the media, but regarding Sony’s upcoming plans. We learn from them that a cheaper and slimmer version of the PlayStation 5 will debut on the market later this year.

The news, however, should come as no shock to anyone. It is worth recalling that at the end of last year, the service, which would debut around September 2023.

Interestingly – according to the findings of Iinsider Gaming – this device would have have a removable Blu-ray drive. Customers could therefore buy a cheaper version of the console without a drive, and if necessary, buy a drive at a later time.

Currently, PlayStation 5 is sold in two versions. The standard edition (with Blu-ray drive) costs PLN 2,549 in Poland. In turn, the prices of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition start from PLN 2,249.
