A man who traveled from the UK to Jamaica with the intention of going on vacation has died at the resort while trying to complete a drinking-related challenge.

Timothy Southern was 53 years old and, according to People, the trip was in May 2022. He was accompanied by several family members and friends.

A year has passed since the event and final results in toxicology may be a while away. The case got legal channels, because of the fierce complaints that arose around it.

For now, they know what Staffordshire coroner Emma Serrano said, who ruled Timothy’s death was alcohol-related, ITV News reported.

Similarly, a pathologist announced that “the cause of death was acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption”.

The cocktails he drank contained a lot of alcohol.

Challenge of the 21 cocktails

Timothy Southern stayed with his family at a resort in Saint Ann, Jamaica. Everything went well, beach, sun and lots of reggae. One evening at the resort bar, he encountered “two other guests who were participating in a drinking challenge.”

Regarding the challenge, Semana pointed out: “Two Canadian women were celebrating the birthday of one of them and trying to complete the challenge of drinking the 21 cocktails the bar offered. The man wanted to try it in front of them and other people.”

Apparently Timothy Southern had already had brandy and beer. Enticed by the challenge, he went in and was able to try 12 cocktails out of the 21 the bar offered. The man then retreated to his room, where, People reported, he began to look distraught.

A family member reported that Timothy was “drowning on his back. I put him in the recovery position and yelled for an ambulance.”

It made a gurgling sound. Then he vomited. I started calling his name, but there was no response.

Relatives denounce the inadequate treatment of the hotel and the nurse

For Southern’s family, the hotel was able to assist them in emergencies, such as quickly calling an ambulance. There is also criticism of the presented reaction of the nursing staff.

“I told her, ‘Don’t sit and watch him, start CPR.’ She only gave him chest compressions, if she had known what she was doing he might still be here,” he told ITV News.

“The service and treatment he received was unpleasant,” said the victim’s relative.

The case was taken to court, Semana published, adding that “forensic analyzes could take at least three years to reach Europe, until 2025.”
