Apple will permanently delete an entire photo album from all iPhones next month, but thankfully there’s an easy way to prevent content from being lost forever.

The tech giant has announced in a statement that it will remove My Photo Stream or Sequence of Photos, an album that automatically stores your snapshots from the past 30 days.

As part of the closing My Photo Stream stopped loading snapshots on June 26 and everything on it will be lost when the album drops on July 26. If you are an iPhone user, it is recommended to enter this album and save the contents to your device. This is only useful if the photos are not already saved in your photo library.

To access My Photo Stream and save your content, go to the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad. Go to the My Photo Stream album, then select in the top right corner of the screen. Next, tap to select all the images you want to keep, then tap Share (a square with an upward arrow coming out of the top) before tapping Save Image to save these photos to your device.

My Photo Stream has been offering free storage for over a decade and it’s an alternative to iCloud Photos, which is now more expensive in the UK and other countries. Apple recommends the following in its statement:

“From now on, the iCloud Photos app is the best way to keep the photos and videos you take up to date across all your devices and securely stored in iCloud. If iCloud Photos is already enabled on all your devices, you don’t need to do anything else — your photos are already synced to iCloud. To check this, on iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > your name > iCloud. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click your name, then click iCloud. Make sure it says “On” next to Photos on all devices.

The reason why Apple discontinued My Photo Stream is unclear, although the decision could be pushy users subscribe to the paid version of iCloud, since the free version has limited space. iCloud offers a free storage tier of 5 GB, which is enough to store about 3,500 photos, but if you want more storage, you’ll have to pay.

iCloud is a service designed to help iPhone users keep their most important information, such as photos, files, and backups, safe, up-to-date, and available on all their devices. Apple has started increasing the value of this service in some countries. Prices in the UK are up 25%.
