Work on the so-called The Data Act has been going on for a year, and now – after several hours of talks – the arrangements for the wording of the regulation have been completed. The regulations include, among others: the obligation to facilitate the user to transfer his data from one network service to another, e.g. files stored in the cloud, when he changes smartphone and operating system to a competing one.
EU regulations will hit Apple. The giant will have to facilitate the escape from iCloud?
As reported, the regulations will hit Apple to the greatest extent, which loves to close its services, making it difficult for users to switch to competitor solutions. If the regulation comes into force, Apple will have to modify the iCloud service so that the customer can easily migrate data from iOS to an Android phone and from iCloud to, for example, Google Drive or a third-party solution.
The company will probably be forced to introduce a button or an additional application that will facilitate such a process. Interestingly, the American giant offers a suitable program on Google Play to easily transfer data from an old phone (with Android) to a new iPhone or iPad. However, the solution works only one way and does not allow data transfer from the Apple device to competitor solutions.
This is yet another problem for Apple in the European Union
This is yet another EU regulation that can seriously hit Apple. In October 2022, the European Parliament passed a regulation under which equipment manufacturers will have to use a common charging connector – USB type C. The iPhone manufacturer is the only one to use its own system – Lightning in smartphones. We can therefore expect that future generations of iPhones will appear with a USB connector, which is definitely more universal.
Apple now also has to counter allegations before European Union antitrust officials as a result of the complaint, Spotify. A music streaming service from Sweden believes that Apple is using its position unfairly in an attempt to encourage users to use Apple Music. Spotify wants to inform its users about the price of using their service in the application card from the AppStore. The Americans, in turn, believe that Spotify’s allegations are unfounded.
