Do you block ads? YouTube will block you. Unless you pay for the Premium version

YouTube decided to deal with users who do not want to pay for a subscription and at the same time avoid watching ads. The platform is currently experimenting with the possibility of cutting off access for users who use AdBlock plug-ins.

YouTube Premium, a paid version of the most popular video platform in the world, was launched in the USA in 2015, but only four years later did it reach Poland. During this time, Google tried to encourage us to pay for the subscription, adding several features that are unavailable to users of free YouTube (including the lack of ads and the ability to download videos to the phone). Apparently now he decided to bring out much heavier guns.

YouTube has started blocking ad blockers. Three free movies

YouTube has announced that it has started blocking access to the platform for users who block ads. Some viewers are warned that they may stop playing videos unless they unblock ads. More precisely, YouTube is supposed to cut off access to the video after playing three videos. Representatives of the platform confirmed that they are actually running a “small experiment around the world”. It is intended to “encourage users with enabled ad blockers” to unblock them or try the paid Premium version, the company emphasized in a comment.

Google spokesman Oluwa Falodun told The Verge that “detection of ad blockers is nothing new” and now a good chunk of competition is “regularly asking” to disable ad blocking plug-ins. However, he stressed that YouTube will first show users “multiple notifications” asking them to allow ads or move to YouTube Premium. Blocking access to the platform has a solution in case these fail. “We take play and pause only very seriously [odtwarzanie] only if viewers ignore repeated requests to allow ads on YouTube,” a Google spokesperson wrote. He also reminded that blocking ads violates the platform’s terms of service.

YouTube emphasizes that advertising is necessary for creators to be paid for their work and for the platform to function normally. He adds that it is thanks to the breaks for spots that users – if they do not want to – do not have to pay for watching YouTube. It is worth mentioning, however, that recently the number of advertisements on the site has increased significantly. The duration of cutscenes, which cannot be skipped, has also increased.
