A woman experienced an unexpected situation of terror when she arrived at an airport in Bangkok, Thailand.

While walking, he stumbled onto a moving walkway with his suitcase and what followed was terrifying: his left leg became trapped on the last stretch, the Daily Mail described.

The tourist asked for help. Some froze on the spot; others managed to press the emergency switch to try to deactivate the walkway.

As they tried, ABC notes, the catwalk kept moving “tearing the muscles, tendons and bones of the leg.”

airport tragedy

The events took place on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok.

Early in the day, the 57-year-old woman arrived at the air terminal with the intention of boarding a flight from Don Mueang airport to Nakhon Si Thammarat, a province in the south of the Asian country.

Images circulating of the dramatic moment show the woman in a beige sweater and jeans.

The great pain he felt when he saw his left leg get caught in the catwalk is clearly visible on his face.

A medical team, the Daily Mail reports, had to amputate the left leg above the knee due to the severe damage.

The woman informed her of what they would do and asked for a second opinion. It’s not easy to receive such hard news.

She was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment.

“We are sad”

The tragedy caused by the team is investigated. According to the aforementioned publication, a team of engineers is looking for the cause.

So far, according to the Daily Mail, “the yellow comb-shaped plates have broken from where they normally cover the edge of the tire where the moving walk ends.”

Amid surprise and pain, the airport management issued a statement in solidarity with the victim.

“Don Mueang Airport is deeply saddened by the incident and is ready to fully accept responsibility and take care of medical expenses and reimbursements,” they said.

They added that the air terminal director and management visited the patient.

This shocking episode is the second incident involving the moving walkway. What happened to the woman was in Terminal 2; in 2019 “a passenger’s shoe was damaged after getting stuck on the airport moving walkway near Terminal 1”.

In the Daily Mail they reported that the catwalk dates from 1996 and was manufactured by the Japanese company Hitachi. On Thursday, June 29, it was learned that the airport management is aiming to change it “to a newer model” in about two years.
