Insider: Google abandons the production of augmented reality glasses
The American company Google has stopped the development of augmented reality glasses. This is reported by the publication Insider.
According to insiders, the corporation decided to abandon the development of a new augmented reality device and close production. Instead, Google will create an operating system for devices that support AR, which will be provided under license.
A closed project, called Project Iris, described the creation of a headset for working with augmented reality. As part of its development, Google in 2020 acquired North, a smart glasses startup.
Insider sources noted that Google pushed the project into the background. This came after several reshuffles and layoffs in the leadership of Project Iris. Google declined to comment on the situation.
Journalists recalled that in May 2022, the corporation introduced an early version of smart glasses with augmented reality. The device was equipped with a camera and special screens onto which the image was projected. The glasses also had the function of translating foreign speech.
On June 5, Apple announced Vision Pro augmented reality glasses. The device, priced at $3,499, should be available in early 2024.
